Ravensdown

The Tākaka Hill Biodiversity Group Trust exemplifies the power of community collaboration between industry, farmers, and local residents in protecting a valuable natural area. Tākaka Hill is home to rare karst landscapes, mature sub-alpine beech forest, and rimu ecosystems. Ravensdown’s site and surrounding land support five rare tree species, including limestone kowhai, as well as many endangered birds and the almost extinct Powelliphanta hochstetteri giant land snail.

Ravensdown contributes to the project by providing time, resources, and land, actively managing Ravensdown-owned areas within the Trust’s management zone. This includes surveying, spraying, trapping pest species, and fencing. Eco-sourcing seeds is critical for successful habitat restoration, and Ravensdown provides a dedicated area for propagating seeds to ensure their survival in the unique microclimate of Tākaka Hill. Additionally, Ravensdown has supplied a local recycling depot for Tākaka Hill residents, further supporting sustainable community initiatives.
