Norman Petereit
Norman Petereit brings a diverse background and a lifelong passion for conservation to his role as Secretary and Treasurer of the Tākaka Hill Biodiversity Group Trust. His professional journey has taken him from the Australian Airforce to a career in IT, and now to Kono Horticulture, a Wakatū Incorporation business. Along the way, he has also gained his commercial pilot licence.
Although Norman only moved to Tākaka Hill in late 2016, his connection to the natural world goes back to childhood. Growing up in Australia, he spent countless hours exploring the bush—building huts, following streams, and immersing himself in the outdoors. These early experiences sparked a deep appreciation for the environment and its complexity.
After relocating to New Zealand in the mid-1990s, Norman’s conservation focus sharpened while raising a family on a lifestyle block. There he witnessed firsthand the impacts of invasive plants, animal pests, and land modification. This experience reinforced his determination to protect and restore native ecosystems.
That passion ultimately led him to Tākaka Hill, where he purchased a bush block within the area’s distinctive limestone and marble landscapes. Drawing on experience gained through volunteering with other conservation groups, Norman was well-prepared to support the establishment of the Trust.
In his dual role, Norman plays a vital part in advancing the Trust’s conservation work and ensuring its financial sustainability. His skills, dedication, and commitment to preserving the natural heritage of Tākaka Hill make him an invaluable member of both the Trust and the wider community.
What is your favourite native bird, and why?
“I love the South Island Robin (toutouwai) for their small size, big attitude, and a lot to say for themselves.”
